Sam Kelly - Meet the Team
What did you do before joining EDS?
I started out by completing a one year placement with EDS while still at University, before going back to complete my final year BEng in Clean Technology. This gave me a great introduction into the Offshore Wind industry and a chance to put my learning into practise by getting on site and completing various HV maintenance activities.
What’s your role Within EDS?
I am currently performing an operational role to gain site and switching experience. This is enabling me to work towards becoming fully authorised to perform HV Switching duties and facilitate work in a safe and effective manner. I’m also taking part in various maintenance activities to get a good understanding of the HV assets which EDS look after.
On top of the many career opportunities, the renewables industry contributes massively to the production of new clean energy sources that are ultimately helping to improve energy efficiency. EDS plays a massive and varied role at the different wind farms it operates at. Getting the opportunity to work in such a variety of areas with highly experienced engineers makes the job very appealing.
What’s your advice for young people looking at a career in renewables?
I’m still quite new to the industry myself, but I would definitely recommend a career in the renewables sector. Technology is rapidly changing, and new ideas are being brought to the table within the wind industry. Turbines are becoming much more powerful making them able to generate a much larger amount of electricity than before, and the emergence of floating turbines gives the opportunity for sites to be located in deeper water, where fixed foundations are not feasible. All these new ideas show there is still plenty to learn and improve within this fast-growing sector, which should hopefully inspire more young people to get involved.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy both playing and watching sports, particularly football. I also enjoy meeting up with friends and travelling, as I like to experience as many new cultures as I can while I have the opportunity. I try to pick up the piano now and again as I had always played it growing up, although sometimes it gets pushed to the side, but I’d like to get back to a decent level.
