Paul Murray – Meet the Team
What did you do before joining EDS?
After starting out by taking a modern apprenticeship at Northern Ireland Electric (NIE).I.E,. I then spent 6 years working in Perth, Australia, for Western Power as an HV Controller working on networks up to 220kV. Working in Australia was great because it gave me experience dealing with problems associated with a more extreme climate and larger scale EHV networks.
Before starting at EDS HV I worked as an operations controller for ESB in their windfarm control room in Dublin.
What is your role within EDS and what does it involve?
As an HV Control Engineer my jobs is to control and co-ordinate safety activities across the company’s portfolio of sites up to and including 400kV, continually making immediate independent decisions to maintain Network integrity, and identify, report, and respond to incidents, emergency situations, and abnormal conditions.
The renewable sector is at the cutting edge of the Industry. There is a sense of doing a little your bit for the environment and a pride that goes with it. I find people are genuinely interested if you tell them you work in the wind industry.
What advice would you give to young people looking at careers in Renewable industry?
My advice would be to complete all your studies at the earliest stage possible. Get them out of the way then get some life experience by going travelling or better still, live and work abroad.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I have a couple of small kids, so most of my free time is spent with them and my wife. My dad owns a farm and my little boy loves tractors/quads and animals, so we tend to spend a lot of spare time up there. I follow Liverpool FC and would love to get over to a few more games if I get the chance.
