EDS HV GROUP PREPARES 96MW EREBUS PROJECT FOR CONNECTION AGREEMENT WITHIN 6 MONTHS

LUKE BISHOP, GROUP ENGINEERING DIRECTOR FOR EDS HV GROUP, COMPLETED A VIABLE PRE-FEED OUTLINE DESIGN THROUGH TO GRID CONNECTION

Luke Bishop, Group Engineering Director for EDS HV Group, has completed a viable outline (pre-FEED) design for the entire Erebus Wind Farm system from the wind turbine generator (WTG) connection through to grid connection point. The project covered grid connection application, power system studies, cable rating studies, and onshore route design, and resulted in the project Grid Connection Agreement being secured within six months. The 96MW Erebus Project was being developed at the time by Simply Blue Energy and is located in the Celtic Sea off the South West coast of Wales. After successfully securing the grid connection the project gained further investment from Total New Energies Ltd and became part of Blue Gem Wind, a joint venture between Simply Blue Energy and Total, set up to develop floating wind projects in the Celtic Sea.

Luke Bishop, Group Engineering Director of EDS HV Group said;

“I designed a viable preliminary substation, the electrical layout of the offshore wind farm, all the electrical elements that go between those and also the connection to the National Grid.

Taking the Erebus project electrical design from a blank piece of paper to securing the project Grid Connection Agreement in such a condensed amount of time was one that I really enjoyed - we had to work together very efficiently to do it in such a timely manner - and I think it’s fair to say we did.”

The Erebus Project is to be built within waters depths of 70 metres and is to make use of floating foundations from Principle Power. It is expected to be a great boost to its local economy, with a recent report by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult projecting that a pipeline of 1GW of floating wind could support 3,200 jobs in South West England and in Wales. The report produced for the Welsh Government and the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership also predicts that the project could contribute up to £682m into the local economies over the next decade.

Ryan Henderson, EDS HV Group Managing Director, said;

“Luke has a very unique and varied career background, with experience at every stage of the process, from FEED to design to the front line on the National Grid. This means he is able to competently make sure projects meet the expectations of all parties involved at every stage, making the project as efficient as possible both in terms of price and time. He definitely did this with Erebus!”
