Further upskilling for EDS as the team completes Cable Sentry™ Training Programme
EDS staff have completed the next level of their Cable Sentry™ training as their Horizon 2020 project draws to a close.
The latest training was provided by OptaSense, supplier of the Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) equipment. The culmination of a 24-month Horizon 2020 project, the training enables EDS to offer Cable SentryTM as part of its monitoring and fault-finding services. Using DAS, Cable Sentry™ offers a fault pre-location which can achieve accuracy of up to 10m.
OptaSense trained the team to process cable data within their dedicated supercomputer and use specialist software for interrogation and report writing. In addition, the EDS control centre can now remotely monitor the system, interpreting cable data and providing initial response to alarms.
Marc Glenn, Technical Projects Manager at EDS said:
“As our project nears completion it is excellent to close the loop and have the full suite of Cable Sentry ™ training. We now have the skills to offer a turnkey service from installing and calibrating the equipment onsite and remotely monitoring activity from the control centre, through to interpreting data and producing reports. This is a critical point in our Cable Sentry™ journey, and although the Horizon 2020 project is almost complete, there are still many more exciting developments to come."
Dr Chris Minto, OptaSense’s Engineering Director added:
“Working with EDS on the Horizon 2020 project has seen an exciting range of deployments of Cable Sentry™ and has delivered a massive and unique set of data covering a really wide range of examples of cable deployment and the problems associated with it. Developing tools for monitoring the long-term trending of DAS data has pushed out the boundaries of interest from live and forensic data to months and years. We are very pleased to have transferred the skills and knowledge to deliver quality deployments and look forward to further developments and new automated tools for the end users.”
